Star Wars has quietly recast a major villain eight years after the character’s original film appearance. With the franchise celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, recasting has become a regular part of the Star Wars universe. Dryden Vos recast Star Wars, while others sparked considerable controversy among the fanbase.
A History of Star Wars Character Recasts
Character recasting is not new to Star Wars. The franchise has recast iconic roles multiple times across different eras and formats.
Original and Prequel Trilogy Recasts
One notable early example involved Emperor Palpatine. In The Empire Strikes Back, the character appeared as a hologram, voiced by Clive Revill and physically portrayed by Marjorie Eaton. However, in Return of the Jedi and subsequent live-action appearances, Ian McDiarmid took over the role permanently.
When the prequel trilogy was created decades earlier in the Star Wars timeline, many original trilogy roles were naturally recast. This included Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett, Owen and Beru Lars, and Mon Mothma.
Animated Series and Disney Era Recasts
The animated Clone Wars series recasted most prequel voice actors, with Matt Lanter as Anakin, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan, and both Ian Abercrombie and Tim Curry as Palpatine.
In the Disney era, Benjamin Bratt replaced Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa in Andor season 2 due to scheduling conflicts. Additionally, Alden Ehrenreich famously played young Han Solo opposite Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Dryden Vos Recast in Maul: Shadow Lord
The latest recast involves Dryden Vos, the primary antagonist from Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the season 1 finale of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the character has been recast with a new voice actor.

From Paul Bettany to Scott Whyte
Scott Whyte now voices Dryden Vos in episodes 9 and 10 of Maul – Shadow Lord season 1, replacing Paul Bettany, who originally played the character in Solo. Whyte is an experienced voice actor with credits including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots, and the video game Batman: Arkham Shadow.
Interestingly, Paul Bettany’s casting was itself a recast. Michael K. Williams originally portrayed Dryden Vos but was unable to return during the film’s extensive reshoots.
The Character’s Return in Shadow Lord
In the Maul – Shadow Lord season 1 finale, Dryden contacts Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) with a significant proposal. He offers safe passage off the Imperial-occupied planet Janix in exchange for Maul eliminating Rintero, the leader of the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn. Following a near-fatal encounter with Darth Vader, Maul agrees to uphold his end of the bargain.
While Whyte’s voice differs from Bettany’s performance, it maintains consistency with the character established in Solo. The recast was not officially announced beforehand, keeping Dryden’s appearance a surprise for viewers.
Voice Actor Recasting in Star Wars Animation
Voice actor recasting is a common practice in Star Wars animated productions. Even the titular character of Maul – Shadow Lord underwent recasting. Ray Park physically portrayed Maul and Peter Serafinowicz voiced him in The Phantom Menace, while Sam Witwer first voiced the character in The Clone Wars and has continued the role in Star Wars Rebels and various LEGO Star Wars productions.

Dryden Vos Expanded Role in Season 2
Although Dryden Vos has limited screen time in Maul – Shadow Lord season 1’s final episodes—with focus remaining on Maul, Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon), and the main characters facing Darth Vader—his role will expand significantly in the already-renewed season 2.
Connecting to Solo’s Plot
In Solo, Dryden served as the main villain and face of Crimson Dawn, but hinted at answering to someone higher. This mystery was revealed to be Maul, who actually controls the syndicate and the larger criminal underworld. This storyline was intended for a Solo sequel, but the film’s disappointing box office performance prevented further development.
With Maul – Shadow Lord season 2, fans will finally see this alliance between Dryden and Maul explored in depth, making the Dryden Vos recast a key element in expanding the Star Wars criminal underworld narrative.
