Fans of The Spectacular Spider-Man have long hoped for a revival, but voice actor Josh Keaton—who brilliantly portrayed Peter Parker in the beloved animated series—has shed light on why Disney is unlikely to bring it back. Will Spectacular Spider-Man return? Sony still holds the rights to the show.

In a recent discussion, Keaton explained, “Sony still owns the rights to the show… So if Disney wanted to continue making it, they would have to basically pay Sony to license the show. Why would they do that?” His statement highlights the complicated Spider-Man rights issue between Sony and Disney, which has been a major factor in the character’s multimedia adaptations.

Why Disney Might Not Revive The Spectacular Spider-Man

1. Licensing Complications – Since Sony owns the rights to the series, Disney would need to negotiate a deal to continue production. Given that Disney already has its own animated Spider-Man projects (Marvel’s Spider-Man and Freshman Year), investing in a Sony-owned show may not make financial sense.
2. Competing Spider-Verses – Sony is actively expanding its Spider-Verse franchise with hits like Into the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse. Reviving The Spectacular Spider-Man could conflict with Sony’s own plans.
3. Disney’s Focus on New Content – Disney+ is prioritizing original Marvel animated series, making it unlikely they’d revisit a show they don’t fully control.

Could There Still Be Hope?

While Keaton’s comments suggest a revival is improbable, fan demand remains strong. If Sony ever decides to revisit the series—perhaps for a Spider-Verse crossover—there’s a slim chance we could see Keaton’s Peter Parker swing back into action.

For now, The Spectacular Spider-Man remains a cult classic, celebrated for its sharp writing, dynamic animation, and Keaton’s standout performance.
